F. Morellon la Cave after William Hogarth
(The Foundlings)
London 1739
120 x 215 mm
Trimmed close to image.
Hogarth’s design, engraved by La Cave, was used as a head piece to a Power of Attorney for collecting subscriptions for the Foundling Hospital. The design tells the story of Coram’s project; a mother deserts her baby, a baby lies helpess under the bridge, a mother weeps and drops a dagger she might have used on her child.
The beadle of the hospital carries her child to the Foundling Hospital.
