Brougham sits in a comfortably upholstered chair inscribed Place, holding a Treasury Broom, over a small fire upon which is draped his legal gown of Old Stuff. The fire is stoked by papers inscribed Catholic Emancipation, March of Intellect, Blacks, Mulatoes, Liberty, Reform &c. and the smoke given off by the burning gown is inscribed Retrenchment, Vapour, Patriotism, Independence and Public Charities. His new gown (labelled Patent New Silk) and wig hang on a stand behind him, and in the background is a bulging brief bag and a ‘magic’ picture entitled Anticipation depicting the Mace and Sword below the Purse of the Great Seal. Brougham’s support of Canning’s Ministry had brought him the reward of a silk gown. The Chancellorship is prophesied in the ‘magic picture’. BM 15406.
