Jospeh Nollekens was the son of a Flemish immigrant of the same name. His father was a Watteau-esque painter of picturesque landscapes. His sculptor son became the pre-eminent British portrait sculptor of the late eighteenth century. He is depicted in this stipple engraving with the bust of Charles James Fox. He holds finishing tools in his right hand. The portrait by Abbot on which this print is based now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
