A half length portrait, enclosed in an oval of the French General of artillery Gédéon Berbier du Metz, Comte de Rosnay (1626-1709). He wears armour and an enormous periwig, and his features are disfigured by an immense scar and the loss of his left eye, where he was wounded by a spent cannonball at the battle of Fleurus in 1690. He is buried in the church of St. Willebrod at Gravelines in northern France, where there is an impressively sculpted monument to his achievements by Francois Girardon.
