The Duke of Wellington stands in a gallery, inspecting a collection of busts and portrait heads of possible and impossible additions to the Ministry. Prominent on the left is Brougham on a pedestal, next on a lower pedestal is Hume, with Daniel O’Connell on the floor. Huskisson and Palmerston head a row of busts in the centre, the Whigs occupy a high shelf, Louis Phillippe, labelled a French Pattern, is in the background on the right, while a few lie broken and discarded on the floor. Wellington’s need for reinforcement by either the Whigs of Huskissonites was well known, and the arrangement of the busts highlights the association of Whigs and ultra-Tories. BM 16264.
