One of Winstanley’s famous series after the pictures in the collection of Lord Derby at Knowsley. Hamlet Winstanley (1698-1756) was born and died in Warrington. He studied under Kneller and made prints of Thornhill’s paintings under the dome of St Paul’s. The series from Knowsley includes a number of classical allegorical paintings. Amor Scientiarum depicts a winged cupid grasping an arrow stuck into a pile of fanciful classical armour. The the right of this sits a selection of string and wind instruments of the period.
