The Political Weeping Willow

London, W Holland, May 13th. 1791

Original hand colouring

210 x 175 mm

Trimmed to image with slight loss.

Fox stands full face, his arms extended; these arms are the branches of a tree, and his body its trunk. The two branches fork into the boughs of a weeping willow, whose foliage forms an arch above Fox’s head, and hangs nearly to the ground. Tears fall from his eyes and pour in a stream down the trunk od the tree, forming a pond at his feet. A satire on the famous scene in the House of Commons on 6th. May between Fox and Burke when Fox wept copiously. BM 7860
