A rare and interesting caricature, parodying Hogarth’s Garrick as Richard III. Charles James Fox, in the robes of a Tudor monarch and a medal round his neck inscribed Order of Blacklegs, starts up from his daybed, hand outthrust, and an expression of horror on his face. On the floor lie a litter of papers relating to his India Bills and the Westminster Election, curtains are drawn back on either side of his couch, and in the background is a portrait of the Duchess of Devonshire, wearing a Fox favour at her breast. Fox was a descendant of King Charles II, and the satire refers to the return of Fox for the Orkney boroughs and the Duchess’s canvassing on his behalf during the Westminster Election. BM 6622
