A rare satire on speculation and government manipulation of the Stock Market. Charles James Fox stands on the wharfside steps of the Treasury in Whitehall, hauling a huge dragging fishnet from the Pool of Speculation. The net (labelled Peace within a Fortnight ), is full of stockbrokers labelled Omnium and 4 pr cent Deals. Behind Fox stands a group of Whig ministers, including Sheridan, Petty and Grey, who help to pull in the net. Fox was accused of circulating rumours of peace with France in order to boost the price of Government stocks, especially Omnium, the funds in which a Government loan was invested. BM 10587.
