Half length portrait of Samuel Parr (1747-1825) seated full-face behind a table; his right fist rests on a large book, Bellen[denus]; in his left hand is the stem of a long pipe which he smokes, scowling. In the smoke are the words 'Damn τ?ν δεινα'. Beneath the title is etched:'"Fore tamen optandum est ut ad ultionem potius quam defensionem composita fiat Tabula"
