James Sayers
(Earl Bathurst)
(Members of the Coalition Ministry of 1782)
London, C Bretherton  17th. June  1782
Etching
180 x 110 mm
£85
Bathurst stands almost full-faced, his habds thrust under his waistcoat, he wears a tie-wig and sword. He has a senile and almost imbecile expression.
Bathurst (1714-94), though he was removed from the Chancellorship in 1778, was Lord President of the Council from November 1779 till North’s fall in March 1782.
From a series of small, whole length caricature portraits of prominent members of the Whig Coalition and opponents of the American War. The inspiration was apparently the ministerial changes of March 1782.
