Celebrated Chess Match at Parsloe’s
London 1804
Engraving
110 x 165 mm
£120
A small, rare engraving showing a chess match in progress. The celebrated Andre Danican Phillidor of Paris played two matches blindfolded, at the same time against Count Bruhl and Mr. Wilson, an assistant moving the pieces for him. The match was strongly contested and lasted for an hour and thirty five minutes. He lost in the end, the odds against him being immense. The engraving shows the scene at Mr. Parsloe’s in St. James’s St, with a numerous company present, including the Turkish Ambassador.
