Mme de Grafigni
(Paris, c. 1750)
Etching

£65
A half length portrait, enclosed in an oval frame, of the French woman novelist and associate of Voltaire, Madame de Graffigny (1695-1758). Depicted as an elderly woman, she has a plump, square face and wears a lace cap and collar and fur trimmed dress. An inveterate gossip and letter writer, she became famous for her voluminous correspondence and the publication in 1730 of her popular novel Lettres d’une Peruvienne.
