A rare half length portrait of the poet, essayist, literary critic and Headmaster between 1766-93) of Winchester College. He wears a short, full bottomed, clerical wig and black academic robe. Educated at Winchester and Oriel College, Oxford, he became curate at Basingstoke and Chelsea and later Prebendary of St. Paul's and Westminster. Warton was appointed travelling chaplain to the Duke of Bolton and second master at Winchester in 1755. He published several volumes of poetry, edited and partially translated Virgil and was a great friend of Dr. Johnson and his circle.
